چکیده

When comparing measurements to numerical simulations of moisture transfer through porous materials a rush of the experimental moisture front is commonly observed in several works shown in the literature, with transient models that consider only the diffusion process. Thus, to overcome the discrepancies between the experimental and the numerical models, this paper proposes to include the moisture advection transfer in the governing equation. To solve the advection-diffusion or the so-called convection differential equation, it is first proposed two efficient numerical schemes and their efficiencies are investigated for both linear and nonlinear cases. The first scheme, Scharfetter– Gummel (SG), presents a Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL) condition but is more accurate and faster than the second scheme, the well-known Crank–Nicolson approach. Furthermore, the SG scheme has the advantages of being well-balanced and asymptotically preserved. Then, to conclude, results of the convective moisture transfer problem obtained with the SG numerical scheme are compared to experimental data from the literature. The inclusion of an advective term in the model may clearly lead to better results than purely diffusive models.

Asymptotic Behaviour of Wetting Fronts in Porous Media with Exponential Moisture Diffusivity

Abstract. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the wetting front arising from unsaturated flow in porous media wherein the liquid saturation θ obeys a nonlinear diffusion equation having moisture diffusivity that is an exponential function D(θ) = Do exp(βθ). For values of the physical parameters corresponding to actual porous media, the diffusivity at the residual value of saturation is D...

Simulation of Stresses Induced by Heat and Mass Transfer in Drying Process of Clay-like Material

Drying represents one of the oldest unit operations employed in industrial processes. Drying is viewed as a process of simultaneous heat and mass transfer. Porous Clay-like material undergoes stresses due to non-uniform distribution of temperature and moisture induced by heat and mass transfer respectively. The aim of this work is to simulate the stresses induced by heat and mass transfer durin...

A Second Order Accurate Method in Simulation of Underwater Explosion

In this paper, a numerical scheme is proposed for the multi-fluid compressible flows. This method is applied to the problem of underwater explosion. The proposed scheme is basically the extension of Godunov method in gas dynamic problems to the multifluid environments and is second-order accurate in space. In this method, also, the problem of artificial mixing of two different phases on Euleria...

Numerical Simulation of Combustion with Porous Medium in I.C. Engine

Porous media has interesting features in compared with free flame combustion due to the extended of the lean flammability limits and lower emissions. Advanced new generation of internal combustion (IC) engines are expected to have far better emissions levels both gaseous and particulate matter, at the same time having far lower fuel consumption on a wide range of operating condition. These c...
